The Ravens finished 2022 with a 10-7, good for second in the AFC North and a Wild Card berth. The biggest question mark surrounding their chances in 2023 is their backfield. Starting RB J.K. Dobbins is still shaken up from an ACL tear he suffered in August 2021. The former Ohio State Buckeye has never fully recovered and is now in jeopardy of beginning the season on the PUP list. Injury aside, the biggest problem facing Dobbins– and this franchise– is his contract. Regardless of Dobbins’ health, he is threatening to hold out while he seeks a new deal on better . The team is in a tough spot and needs to make a decision soon.
If Dobbins doesn’t start the season on the Ravens’ active roster, they will most likely rely on holdover Gus Edwards and newcomer Melvin Gordon III. The former has experience in Baltimore and should have no problem transitioning to a more prominent role. Gordon has bounced around since leaving the Denver Broncos after getting pushed aside by the emergence of Javonte Williams. He is a capable back, although at 30-years old is starting to decline quite a bit.
There are far fewer question marks facing the Eagles. They knifed through the NFL regular season and playoffs, nearly defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. They succumbed to Kansas City, 38-35, but the emergence of Philadelphia and Jalen Hurts has cemented them as one of the NFL’s top teams and Super Bowl favorites entering 2023.
Philadelphia was successful last year, but that didn’t stop them from bolstering their offense. Like Baltimore, they’ll have some job competition in their backfield, as well. The Eagles added Rashaad Penny and D’Andre Swift to the roster, while letting Miles Sanders sign with the Carolina Panthers. Penny and Swift come highly regarded from the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions, respectively. They’ll likely form a committee with holdovers Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott.
The glut of backfield weapons for the Eagles should have a huge impact on their offense. But that foursome may find themselves on the sidelines for this first preseason game. There are a few more questions in Baltimore, no to mention the additional changes Baltimore made in their receiver room and defense, which could lead to more players higher up on the depth chart getting a look.
