The NFL is all about how teams bounce back from poor performances. Things change week-to-week but, football is also so much about matchups.
It’s hard to take a team’s overall resume into this early into the season, but that doesn’t mean Week 1 is meaningless. The Commanders held on to defeat the Arizona Cardinals at home, but we have to factor in how they did it. On the other side, Denver is already dead after suffering a brutal home loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
One of the biggest indicators about a team and if they can cover is whether or not they outrushed their opponent. Seventy percent of the time when a team outrushes their opponent by over thirty yards, they win the game and cover the spread. Denver’s defense, just like Arizona’s, is geared toward limiting the run. However, Washington will get creative with Brian Robinson Jr., especially this season under their new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
Javante Williams will be charged with carrying the football for Denver. His talent might not be a factor though, because we can expect the Broncos to be down early. Russell Wilson and Sean Payton can’t wait to abandon the run game, just like they did against the Raiders in the second half of Sunday’s game. Bieniemy is simply too smart to abandon the run game that early, so even if Washington is down by a score, they will continue to run.
The biggest difference between these two teams is panic. This may sound crazy, but Washington looked more under control with their gameplan than Denver did.
The public will be all over Denver because of Wilson and Payton. Plus, the public still thinks Washington stinks. They may not win the division, but the Commanders will get this one, and they’ll get it outright.
