Hunter Dekkers Accused of Placing Bets on Iowa State Football Games & Other Sports

Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers has been accused of placing multiple sports wagers on ISU sporting events, which include football games, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Story County Attorney’s Office.

According to the Des Moines , the criminal complaint charges Dekkers, a junior, with “tampering with records related to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s probe into sports gambling.”

The complaint alleges Dekker made 26 bets on Iowa State events. That includes a Cyclones football game against Oklahoma State in 2021. Dekker was a sophomore at the time and did not play in the game but was on the roster.

Rumors swirled about Dekkers when the quarterback, who started all 12 games for Iowa State last season, was not present at Big 12 media days while it was publicly known that the school was investigating 15 student-athletes who placed wagers that violated NCAA rules. At the time, head coach Matt Campbell did not specifically address Dekkers’ potential involvement.

It’s alleged that Dekkers risked over $2799 dollars across 366 online bets placed on DraftKings. NCAA rules state that players who violate NCAA rules and risk over $800 can be suspended for 30% of the season or more. Athletes who wager on their own games or their own school are at risk of losing all NCAA eligibility.

Dekkers threw for 3,044 yards with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season. The Cyclones finished just 4-8 with a win over Iowa in September. Dekkers was 12-of-24 ing for 106 yards in the last game of the year, a 62-14 loss to TCU.

In the Iowa State-Oklahoma State in which Dekkers allegedly bet on, the Cyclones won 24-21 but did not cover the 7-point spread. Brock Purdy was the starting quarterback.
