A back-and-forth game with coaches nearly coming to blows didn’t exactly help my wallet, but hey, that’s in the past. We’re diving into the College Football Playoff semifinals, focusing on the matchup between Notre Dame and Georgia.
Notre Dame comes in at 12-1, its only loss a surprising early-season stumble against Northern Illinois. Since then, it’s been on fire, peaking at just the right time. Its defense has been rock solid all year, and I don’t see Georgia having much success throwing against it. Georgia’s run defense, meanwhile, has been mediocre by its standards, ranking 30th in the nation in rushing yards allowed per attempt — Notre Dame’s run defense actually rates better.
Offensively, Notre Dame has one of the best rushing attacks in the country, led by Jeremiyah Love and quarterback Riley Leonard, who adds mobility to the mix. The key question: Can it run effectively against Georgia’s front? Texas couldn’t in the SEC Championship, managing just 1 yard per carry, but Georgia’s run defense isn’t as dominant this year as it’s been in the past.
On the flip side, Georgia’s quarterback situation is a factor. Carson Beck is out, and Gunner Stockton takes over. While he looked serviceable in the SEC Championship game, he’s not ready to handle Notre Dame’s defense, especially if Georgia’s run game struggles.
All things considered, this is a perfect storm for Notre Dame. It’s hot, its defense matches up well, and its rushing attack has the potential to take over. Georgia, meanwhile, feels vulnerable, particularly without Beck under center.
