This Tigers-Astros matchup features arguably the best pitcher in baseball in Tarik Skubal and a guy who has been quite the opposite in Hunter Brown.
Skubs — yeah, we’re on nickname basis — has been stupid good.
I mean, take a look at his Baseball Savant chart here; it’s practically bleeding out.
He’s either in the top 10 or top 20 percentile in basically every meaningful pitching category in baseball this season.
A 31.1% strikeout rate? A less-than-5% walk rate? This man has been COOKIN’ out there on the mound, and we’d be nuts not to back him on any NRFI bet at this point.
It doesn’t matter who the opponent is. At this point, he’s proven he’s matchup-proof. The Astros scare me not, especially sans Kyle Tucker.
Now, Brown, on the other hand … he scares me — a little. If we look under the hood on his Baseball Savant page, we can see that the surface-level stats don’t really tell the whole story (5.58 ERA and 1.58 WHIP).
Brown has been good at limiting barrels and hard-hit rate, so how has he been worked for such a high ERA? Well, a bit of bad luck. His BABIP (batting average on balls in play) is .327, which is above league average.
The Tigers aren’t a world-beating offense by any means, and they actually are in the bottom 10 in the league in wRC+ against right-handed pitching this season.
Brown did cash his last NRFI bet opportunity and looked really good in doing so. He threw six shutout innings and struck out seven against the Angels. Let’s hope he continues his good form tonight against another meh offense in the Tigers.
